Center Director Matt McCarty provided an update on various issues important to senior living in the community. The center received a $100K donation toward the land acquisition at the same time Elko County is ending an informal agreement to provide payroll support and insurance benefits to Senior Center employees.

Elko City Manager Jan Baum highlighted City Council agenda items in time for the regular city meeting. Topics included strategic plans, a review of building and planning department procedures, updates on parks and rec improvement projects and adjustments to management salaries.

Valerie Sargeant, Rick Whitington and Emily Crofts were guests to talk about the Ruby Mountain Voices upcoming concert, Saturday, May 9th, a Pop Concert featuring family-friendly choral music performed at the First Presbyterian Church on Sewell Drive. Ruby Mountain Voices has formed a smaller octet, “Echoes,” to perform in alternate venues, and the group is hosting sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming season. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Marianne McKown, Outreach and Development Coordinator, talked about new Vitality Unlimited programs, initiatives and services including the new Vitality Unlimited Mobile Services providing mental health treatment within 200 miles of Elko. Thalia Marin, Director of the non-profit and board member Sharla McDade, were guests to talk about the 5th annual Awareness Conference to be held May 3-5th at the Elko Convention Center. There will be presentations, a talking circle, vendors and an MMIW Awareness Walk on Tuesday, May 5th at 2:30 p.m. followed by a tour of the Great Basin Children’s Advocacy Center and the First Tuesday event at the Elko Convention Center at 5:30 p.m.

Christina Bradford of the Elko American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans Resource Center at Great Basin College visited about all things veteran, ranging from changes to the annual Memorial Day Ceremony to new Officers and Auxiliary Members at the VFW. There are several special events and opportunities planned for this spring and summer, and the organizations are eager to collaborate.

Nevada Poet Laureate Shaun Griffin is the guest of Great Basin College Humanities for a free reading on campus in the library. Griffin talked about his work inspiring Nevada prison inmates, high school students and fellow artists to explore art and creativity.
